TEAMS: Taxonomy / Animals - Shells and skeletons -
I showed GT a collection of amazing mollusc shells, including the horse conch, abalone, the cocks-comb oyster, a large clam, a cone snail, and the nautilus. We examined how the inside of the nautilus shell shows sections that the animal seals off trapped air, used as a buoyancy compensator, and marveled how, as the animal grew in mass, it added more ballast. GT noticed that the nautilus was not a member of the classes I had presented in class, as it was a cross between a gastropod and a cephalopod. We discovered it belonged to a sub-class of cephalopods called Nautilida. Homework: review invertebrates.
