Lesson Topic
Eco-Systems and Animal Survival
Lesson Outline
Jonathan spent most of his time on two Brain Pops. The first one was about the Food Chain. Jonathan reviewed the words Producer and Consumer but today added, Decomposer. Jonathan looked at the interaction of animals in an ecosystem, learning that such plants as mushrooms are the decomposers. From the Nitrogen Cycle we did yesterday, he could see that the Decomposers help to put nutrients back into the soil. The web site also discussed what would happen when a species of animal becomes extinct. Jonathan could see that the animals that depend on that food source go hungry while the animals that animal ate become prolific because they no longer have a predator. The upset in the ecosystem causes disruption throughout the ecosystem. Jonathan worked on the challenge questions which required choosing more than one answer and finding cause and effect answers. Jonathan had practice using his new terms. Jonathan also did readings from ReadWorks.com and answered questions about the food chain and ecosystems. Jonathan took special note about what is meant by the nonliving things in an ecosystem like sunlight, rocks, and water.
