Lesson Outline
Religion: This morning Jonathan read the Hail Mary from his prayer booklet. We then reviewed the vocabulary digital flashcards from unit 4. Language Arts: Our daily language review for today focused on punctuation in a friendly letter. I taught Jonathan that a greeting has a comma as well as the closing. Next, Jonathan wrapped up his Mother’s Day project with a few more similes and a closing sentence. We discussed items he should look for in the self-editing process. He drew and colored an illustration for the perfect finishing touch! We also worked on an activity in which Jonathan had to determine if the sentences read contained similes or not. For literature today, we read chapters 5 – 7 in our novel, Lions at Lunchtime. In our follow-up comprehension and critical thinking activities, we inferred meanings of words from the text as used in context. We examined the words: wailed, fury, and frantic. We discussed the meaning of “spic and span” and Jonathan made a text-to-self connection to explain if he would have followed the honey guide bird like Jack and Annie did. To enrich our subject matter, Jonathan practiced some novel-based spelling words and we read nonfictional articles (with photos) about The Maasai People and hyenas. Finally, for Fun Friday, we finished Jeopardy 3 that we had started last week. Jonathan answered question in the areas of past-tense words, pronouns, prefixes, and possessives and plurals (nouns).
