TEAMS: Taxonomy / Animals - Chordata -
We reviewed the differences between the invertebrates and chordates. We then examined the invertebrate chordates (urochordata and cephalochordate), represented by tunicates (sea squirts) and lancelet fish. These are the simplest chordates and have only the basic notochord (for part of their lives) and lack vertebrae. We discussed the characteristics all chordates have in common: a notochord, a spinal chord, pharyngeal ‘gill’ slits, a tail, a digestive track including an anus and a mouth. We reviewed the main classes, and the areas where distinction can be found: hot/cold blood, parity, skin-type, gills/lungs, type of eggs.
