Lesson Outline
Following the website outline from Max's school assignment, I placed on the board notes focused on : plot, relationship between the characters, and Shakespeare's language. Max placed the outline in his notebook as I discussed the characters who appear in the opening scene of Act I, and explained Shakespeare's use of iambic pentameter to signify that the speaker was noble or royal whereas prose was reserved for commoners. I further provided a definition of the troche meter to distinguish the iambic from the troche and addressed the role of the rhyming couplet. We then began to study Act I by reading a text of the play that has both the original language of Shakespeare and an accompanying modern English version. With respect to important or major speeches ,we studied the original text. As the witches appear in Act I(I) I emphasized the role of the supernatural in the play and had Max add this aspect of the play to his notes. I suggested that he read the modern English version of Act I for next week's class.
