Congress
Lesson Outline
We examined the structure of Congress and the mechanics of Congressional elections. We first noted that all states elect two Senators, but ,by contrast , representation in The House of Representatives is proportional or based on population. I then discussed the role of the census. Sofia examined a 2010 Congressional reapportionment map and discussed which states gained additional representatives and which states lost .We thereby examined population shifts within the country . I further discussed the "undemocratic " Senate which gives small states with a very small population the same representative power as the very populated states. Last, we examined how state legislatures can influence elections to the House by gerrymandering-which I defined and then provided graphic examples. For homework, read pgs. 67-70 and answer assigned questions.
