Session Date
Lesson Topic
Death of Ivan Ilych /tolstoy
Lesson Outline
During the first half of the session, I reviewed Ivan's existentialist crisis as evidenced by specific language in the text. I then provided instruction on the opening of chapter 6 that delves in to what is known in logic as the "Caius syllogism". I provided definitions of syllogism and deductive and inductive reasoning .From there,Matthew did a very good job analyzing how Ivan, prior to his illness, was able to divorce himself from the realities of death i.e. the Caius syllogism , by convincing himself that death and illness were events that happened to other people, not to proper upper class members of society. During the second part of the session, we worked on revisions to Matthew's essay comparing "Naturalism" and Transcendentalism" focusing on the need to reorder his sentences within paragraphs, and to avoid repetition . After reviewing his essay, I distributed a paragraph rewriting exercise I prepared which we started in class. HW-Make essay revisions/complete rewrite paragraph exercise.
