We first reviewed and discussed Matthew's homework which included a paragraph revision exercise. We in detail examined cohesive sentence order, formal usage, and eliminating superfluous words and phrases. With supervision , Matthew does very well in his editing and revision work and readily recognizes the added cogency of the revisions . We then analyzed Chapter 6 of the novel. I noted that analytical essay writing should address literary style such as figurative language. We then examined Tolstoy's personification of "Pain" and addressed the thematic significance of personifying that aspect of Ivan's slow demise. We further examined Ivan's realization that his fatal injury, his symbolic "fall" ,was a consequence of his shallow values and pretentiousness.
