Virtual Tour of Los Angeles
Lesson Outline
In honor of Mercer's birthday/first-time trip to Los Angeles, we spent the period focusing on the wonders of Los Angeles and getting Mercer excited about his trip. I think we succeeded! Having lived in L.A. for 23 years, it was great to share the wonders of L.A. with Mercer. After an overview of the history, geography, topography and sights of the city, Mercer determined several places he may be interested in visiting while in L.A. Mercer likes the juxtaposition of the beach and the mountains and would like to visit the Santa Monica Pier. He is happy to learn that it's very close to where he'll be staying, in Brentwood. Mercer really wants to get close to the Hollywood sign. He now understands that one has to hike up in the Hollywood Hills for the best views of this landmark. We explored another great L.A. landmark: the Griffith Observatory. This is also up in the hills with great views of the sprawling city. Mercer would like to tour the observatory and look through one of its awesome, powerful telescopes. Visits to Hollywood Blvd., the Farmers Market & The Grove are of interest to Mercer, as well. He is enthused to learn about the food and restaurants at the Farmers Market. A very cool, off-the-beaten-path destination is the Magic Castle, also in the Hills. It's hard to gain admission, but Mercer would enjoy the visit to this old, Victorian mansion where one wanders from room to room to observe different magicians performing magic. We discussed the time difference, the climate, some of the rich history and other fun facts about Los Angeles, too. Mercer has assured me that he will share everything he did in L.A. when he returns to school. I look forward to it! Happy early birthday, Mercer!
