Before reading today, we discussed the government of Afghanistan during the time of 1988 in order to understand the setting of the novel. We discussed the theme of death and its effect on the characters and setting. Jaydn then wrote a short essay on the development of the character of Laila and the effect of the theme death has on her character development.
