Macbeth
Lesson Outline
We studied the use of paradox throughout Act I ,first noting the recurrence of the "fair is foul" image and then studying the paradoxes within the three prophesies the witches share with Banquo. I noted how the use of paradox mirrors the appearance vs reality motif. I further discussed how historically there are many alternative editions of all of Shakespeare's plays, each with some slight change of diction or syntax. We examined one phrase where the word "or" instead of the word "of " is used in our edition and discussed how that single word alters the meaning of the sentence. Last ,we continued to analyze the role of free will and fate in Macbeth's life, noting how the supernatural forces connote evil external forces working along with Macbeth's character flaw. HW due Weds-finish ACT I, ans. study guide questions on Act I.
