Macbeth Act I
Lesson Outline
We studied Shakespeare's use of the symbols and the imagery of "milk, blood, and water". With respect to Lady Macbeth's chiding Macbeth as being too full of the "milk of human kindness " , we explored Shakespeare's reversal of traditional gender roles . Macbeth becomes associated with mother's milk and Lady Macbeth calls upon the spirits "to unsex me here". We tied the notion of women traditionally characterized as the "fair "sex to Shakespeare's ongoing "fair is foul" motif as the "fair" Lady Macbeth's ambition degrades her to a character of murderous "foul" action. Matthew discussed Lady Macbeth's hesitation to murder Duncan because of Duncan's resemblance to her father. We noted how this hesitancy suggests that she has some degree of conscience which will haunt her later in the play. I further provided instruction on the use and definition of metonymy and alliteration in Macbeth's speeches. HW -for Weds. finish reading Act II, complete Act I and II study guide.
