Macbeth Act III
Lesson Outline
In preparation for tomorrow 's test on Acts I and II, we first reviewed the concepts of hamartia and fate as well as the the literary devices of metonomy and alliteration. I provided examples from the text. We then examined the critical motifs of blood, milk, and water and their symbolic significance in the speeches of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. We noted how the dialogue makes clear that the murder of Duncan ,the king, is deemed sacrilegious thus explaining why Lady Macbeth's suggestion that "a little water" cures of us this deed is a false hope. We studied how Macbeth immediately after the murder is plagued by guilt and regret which have not yet haunted Lady Macbeth. In this regard, we analyzed the recurring symbolism of sleep as representing the innocence of an untroubled mind. We further noted how the chaos on Earth created by the murder of the king is mirrored in the heavens and nature. Matthew actively participated in class discussion on the role of the supernatural, Macbeth's motivations , and Lady Macbeth as a character breaking traditional gender roles. Last, we watched Act II of the Kennedy Center's production of Macbeth which quite helpfully scrolls the text of play underneath the action.
