Lesson Topic
Macbeth Act V
Lesson Outline
We studied parallel dramatic structure by examining how Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking speeches directly contrast with her assertions at the beginning of the play that "a little water clears us of this deed." We noted the parallel imagery of blood and water in both speeches and Matthew discussed how guilt has overcome Lady Macbeth's conscience .Similarly, we studied how Lady Macbeth's recognition in Act V that all the perfumes in Arabia can not sweeten this (bloody) hand mirrors Macbeths speech in Act II that all of the water in the ocean can not"wash this blood clean from my hand." Matthew noted how the two main characters have reversed moral roles by the end of the play again reenforcing the motif of gender fluidity. Last, we noted the parallel imagery in Lady Macbeth's guilty sleepwalking and Macbeth's earlier realization that "Macbeth has murdered sleep."Matthew carefully studied the text to appreciate and to recognize the play's internal structure tied together by imagery and mirror soliloquies. We made additions to the study guide answers per our class discussion. HW-study for test on Acts III and IV
