Lesson Topic
Post-war Germany: Politics, Developments & Partitioning
Lesson Outline
At the end of WWII, the "Big Three," the U.S., Britain & the USSR wanted to make sure Germany would not have the capability to wage another war. The Big Three met at the Yalta conference to discuss post-war plans for Germany. This resulted in an Allied occupied West Germany and a Soviet occupied East Germany. To stop the people of East Germany from escaping to West Germany, the USSR built the Berlin Wall. The Soviets blockaded West Germany, but the Allies responded to save West Germany. Known as the Berlin Airlift, the Allies flew in food and supplies. It took 45 years for the Berlin Wall to be torn down and the two Germanys were reunited (in 1990). We also covered the Nuremberg Trials between 1945-1949. The trials prosecuted many prominent members of the political, military, judicial, and economic leadership of Nazi Germany, who planned, carried out and participated in the Holocaust and other war crimes. The trials were held in Nuremberg, Germany, (Hitler's favored location for large Nazi rallies) and their international tribunal of judges' decisions marked a turning point in international law - legally acknowledging the horrors of "crimes against humanity."
