As Victorian class rigidity is Matthew's chosen research topic, we studied the next chapter's social criticism of upper class social clubs that serve no purpose other than to provide an excuse for quarreling and inebriation. Pip and Biddy's strained conversation about Pip's promise to visit more often led to a discussion of Pip's failure to realize his own self absorption in contrast to Biddy, who is perceptive enough to realize Pip's assurances are worthless.
