Lesson Outline
As the bildungsroman illustrates a young man's journeys of self discovery or search for identity , we first noted that Pip's status as an orphan lays the groundwork for his journey. In this regard, we discussed the significance of Magwitch's exclamation to Pip that ,"I'm, your second father.". Matthew discussed Pip's revulsion toward his "second father" and raised questions about the impact of the Transportation Law on Pip's decision to hide Magwitch from the authorities. In this regard, we conducted an in-depth analysis of the symbolic connection between clothes and identity noting where this motif has appeared previously in the novel. We studied Pip's conclusion that the more Pip tries to disguise the fugitive ,Magwitch, in new clothes the more Magwitch's true character pierces the facade. Matthew did very well relating this observation to a prior metaphorical passage in the novel . We last examined Mr Jagger's evasive legal jargon when Pip asks for confirmation that Pip's benefactor in indeed the convict he aided years ago as a child. HW -read next two chapters for Tuesday.
