Lesson Topic
The 1970s - A New Age?
Lesson Outline
Since the 1960s and 1970s, New Age thought has played an increasing role in Western social and cultural life. Based on new theories about the interconnectedness of the world, it also draws on older ideas from more established religious traditions, especially those with a mystical side. While the many branches of New Age thought differ greatly, they are all united in the opinion that they are ultimately what is best for the world. Some ideas of New Age thought are now widely accepted in mainstream culture; however, other aspects of New Age philosophies are widely considered controversial, especially by more established religions. A common cultural ideal during the period was that the planet was entering the Age of Aquarius, a 2,160-year period of the Zodiac unlike anything that the world had ever seen. This idea of a new time, and new hope for humanity, was attractive to people looking for new hopes in an era of cultural change. We viewed some excerpts from the musical, "Hair" and the legendary "Real Thing" commercial for Coca-Cola to get a glimpse of how this "New Age" influenced younger people.
