The British Musical Invasion in the 1960s
Lesson Outline
The rebellious tone and image of US rock and roll and blues musicians became popular with British kids in the late 1950s. Young British groups started to combine various British and American styles in different parts of the United Kingdom, such as the movement in Liverpool known as Merseybeat or the "beat boom".
While US acts were popular in the United Kingdom, few British acts had achieved any success in the US prior to 1964. But everything changed when the Beatles debuted on the Ed Sullivan Show in the US in 1964. We viewed clips from this historic event as well as other British Invasion musical acts that took not only Americans, but the world by storm.
