Night by Elie Wiesel
Lesson Outline
Elie Wiesel's memoir of his imprisonment in the Auschwitz concentration camp evokes a strong emotional response as well as curiosity in students. Matthew posed a number of theological and moral questions such as : How could this have happened ? What caused the genocide? How does Christian doctrine relate to the Holocaust? I discussed the anti-Semitic culture in Europe as well as the impact of Treaty Of Versailles on the German zetigeist . We further delved into the issue of collaboration . Last, I discussed the role of Martin Luther and the church in fostering anti-semitic attitudes. Referencing the text, we discussed Weisel's early devout life and the Jewish community's denial of the "rumors" of genocide even after Moshe the Beadle recounts his personal experiences after escaping Nazi captivity.
