Observations and Variables
Lesson Outline
We discussed the idea of statistics at a high level as the science of "extracting information from data." We defined observations and variables. We noted that variables may be classified as quantitative (numerical) or qualitative (categorical). Numerical data can further be subdivided into continuous and discrete, while categorical data can be further subdivided into ordered or nominal. We then described how data is usually presented as a data matrix, and we discussed the significance of the margins.
