IB Exam Format and Skill-Building/Elevated Vocabulary
Lesson Outline
During our first meeting, Lilly described her struggles with French and provided some background on her previous French courses. Together, we discussed the format of the IB exam and each language skill that is activated via each task. I underscored the importance of continually building those skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing) through consistent and daily practice; I shared various ways (Quizlet, YouTube, Netflix shows and movies, vocabulary applications, podcasts, etc.) in which she could practice. Thereafter, we engaged in a short conversation about Lilly's family to activate her speaking skills and give me an opportunity to gauge her vocabulary and speaking abilities. Finally, we explored a wealth of vocabulary pertaining to transitions, conjunctions and locutions that will help set herself apart from her peers on the exam and allow her to elevate her register to a more sophisticated level.
Assignment
Lilly is to explore and practice the transitions/conjunctions vocabulary using the Quizlet link I shared with her.

Due to the pandemic, virtual learning and difficulties last year, Lilly has a very weak foundation in French at this point. She lacks very basic vocabulary and struggles to form complete sentences; she was unable to describe her family members, express her likes/dislikes or say the names of her pets. She could hardly understand me when I was speaking and conversation was therefore very difficult. While I provided her with elevated vocabulary to practice for next week, I fear I might have to scale everything back and start from the beginning with her, filling in the many gaps in knowledge that she has. Next week, I might explore basic regular and irregular verbs in the present tense as well as adjectives. I honestly have no idea how she is managing to stay afloat in her IB course at this time. I have been in touch with her teacher about this, but I am very concerned.
