Lesson Topic
The Settlement of Jamestown Colony
Lesson Outline
Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in the New World in North America, founded in 1607, located on the northeast bank of the James River (in VA). The trip to Jamestown was financed by the Virginia Company, a joint-stock company funded by a group of venture capitalists in London. The first cash crop was tobacco and was initially grown by John Rolfe, the future husband of Pocahontas. Pocahontas, daughter of Powhatan, served as a liaison between the Native Americans and the English, encouraging peace and diplomatic relations between the two cultures. By the middle of the century, enslaved people replaced indentured servants as the primary source of labor in Jamestown.
