The Mayflower & Plymouth Rock Settlements
Lesson Outline
The Mayflower is known for carrying the Plymouth Colony Pilgrims to the New World. That voyage defined the beginning of independent colonization in America. We discussed the following about the Mayflower, its historic voyage, and the Plymouth Colony: Leaving England in 1620, the Pilgrims intended to land close to the previously established Virginia Colony. Storms caused them to land much farther north than expected. The original landing spot of the Mayflower was in Provincetown Harbor. The Pilgrims later moved the ship to Plymouth Harbor where they constructed their colony. Before they established a settlement, the Pilgrims created the Mayflower Compact to govern the new colony. This still did not legitimize any legal rights to settle in Plymouth.
