The 17th & 18th Century Slave Trade
Lesson Outline
In the 17th & 18th centuries, it was common for slavery to be prevalent within the various colonies of Colonial America. Slavery in Colonial America started in the south with Virginia Native Americans being captured as slaves. The first slaves arrived in Jamestown, VA in 1619. Throughout the 17th century, race-based slavery in Colonial America grew rapidly. The human trafficking relationship, between Europe, The Americas, and Africa began as a result of common practice in Europe for hundreds of years. In New England, colonists brought over indentured Europeans and enslaved indigenous Native Americans, typically captured during the war. But eventually, imported slaves begin to replace indentured servants and enslaved indigenous people in the 13 colonies including slaves in the Triangular Trade routes between Europe, N. America and Africa became common.
