The House of Representatives: Definition & Members
Lesson Outline
The House of Representatives is part of the Legislative branch of the federal government. Representatives are elected every two years in even-numbered years. Appropriations or spending bills can only originate in the House of Representatives, which also has the sole power of impeachment. The House is led by the Speaker of the House, chosen at the start of every Congress by majority vote. States with larger populations will have more Representatives since the number of Representatives is determined by population. Currently, there are 45 members in the House of Representatives from all 50 states.
