Lesson Topic
Sons of Liberty: Resistance to the Stamp Act and British Rule
Lesson Outline
The Stamp Act was the first British tax that motivated colonists to oppose the British government. This act infuriated colonists who had to pay an extra tax on paper goods and legal documents. Americans boycotted British goods and continued to smuggle illegal goods into the colonies. Sometimes, the Sons of Liberty, which organized protests, resorted to even more aggressive measures. Tax collectors were attacked - from tarring and feathering to their homes being vandalized. Based in Massachusetts, the Sons of Liberty advocated for the equality of Americans within the British Empire and declared that it was unjust for Parliament to tax the colonies without giving them representation.
