The Second Industrial Revolution
Lesson Outline
The Second Industrial Revolution, also known as the Technological Revolution, occurred from 1870 to 1914. While the First Industrial Revolution created advances in the textile and farming industry, the Second Industrial Revolution advanced transportation, electricity, and oil industries. The most important inventions in the Second Industrial Revolution include the telegraph, the telephone, the modern lightbulb, the assembly line, the automobile, aircraft, and the construction of the transcontinental railroad in the US. Inventors such as Henry Ford, Alexander Graham Bell, and Thomas Edison greatly revolutionized modern life and increased the production of goods and services. Transportation and communication methods became more accessible to Americans who lived in cities. During this time, a large group of inventions were introduced to the public and transformed the way people communicated, traveled, and worked.
