Life Science - The Cell Membrane
Lesson Outline
Today, Atticus and I completed the second half of our cell membrane/ surface area to volume ratio lab activity. We observed that our cubed egg whites absorbed blue dye from the water. We cut them open to observe how far the dye penetrated to the interior of the small versus large cubes. He drew models of the lab in his workbook. He recorded his observations and inferences. I then reviewed how to calculate surface area and volume of a cube. We used this information to calculate the surface area to volume ratio of a small and large cube. We compared the ratios, and observed that the larger the ratio, the more successfully a cell/cube of egg white will be able to transport nutrients from its cell membrane into the interior organelles of the cell.
