Lesson Outline
As we are having a chapter test on Monday, during our first segment we reviewed the plot of chapters 18-20. We then discussed the term "dystopian protagonist " and the characteristics of the dystopian protagonist as this topic will be the subject of Monday's composition writing. Atticus offered an interesting metaphorical analysis of the dystopian protagonist comparing the protagonist to someone escaping from a box. Further, we discussed the events of chapter 21 describing Jonas' escape from the community .During our second session , I noted that the author has by chapter 22 conveyed her thesis and uses the rest of the novel to portray Jonas' escape from the community. In order to help summarize some of the events and thematic elements, I projected an exercise that required Atticus to in his notebook describe what Jonas has learned about the following : hunger, war, family, pain, and grief. We discussed the specific memories that the Giver imparted to Jonas that provided the basis for his knowledge and how this knowledge set Jonas apart from the other members of the community.
