The election process in the US is a complicated machine. In many cases, initial elections called primaries are held to determine who the final candidates will be. These primaries could be open, semi-open, closed, blanket or runoff. Each of these types of primaries establishes what the voters see on their ballots. Once the final candidates are decided, a general election is held. In most cases, the candidate who wins the most votes wins the election, but in the case of the president, that is not the end of the election process. In actuality, the electoral college casts the final ballots to decide who will ultimately become president. This electoral college has both advantages and disadvantages and is the source of a lot of debate among US citizens.
