Lesson Topic
European Imperialism: Characteristics, Motives & Effects
Lesson Outline
European imperialism was the five-centuries-long quest by European countries to acquire territory outside of Europe. Europeans sought to have complete political control over these territories and extract their natural, low-cost resources for their own benefit. There were different motivations for imperialism, but scientific exploration was not one of these. Mostly, the motives were economic, political, racial, or religious. Europeans felt that they were racially and morally superior to Africans, Asians, and other Indigenous people and that they had the right to conquer them. Many conflicts arose due to imperialism. One such conflict was called the Great Game, and it involved a struggle between Britain and Russia for control of parts of India, Persia, and Afghanistan.
