Political Change: Definition, Purpose & Types

While the word political change is a general term that can apply to any change in the political landscape, it is most often reserved for significant disruptions in a government that leads to new or modified leadership or policies. Political change happens when there is a disconnect between the ideals and values of citizens and the values and ideals of the current government. Some of the ways in which political change can occur include social movements, civil wars, coup d'etats, and revolutions. A coup d'etat is sudden, but may lead to a more long and drawn out types of political change. On the other hand, political change, such as social movements, civil wars, and revolutions, tend to be more drawn out. Specifically, though, revolutions change the very structure and ideals of a political system, and are often the most intense type of political change. We looked at some examples of political change i today's class.
