Indian in the Cupboard
Lesson Outline
Building on yesterday's session on identifying character traits, we continued today to locate textual examples of character development. I explained that novels often portray how a character changes or learns from his experiences. Atticus discussed how Omri realizes that his now alive "toy " Indian has feelings and that Omri's prior treatment of Little Bear was insulting. We then noted how Omri has adopted the role of parent to the three inch tall Indian and how that experience matures and changes him. We further discussed Little Bear's often child-like demanding behavior as supporting our conclusion that Omri has assumed the role of parent. At the end of the session,Atticus wrote a chapter summary based on the reading and on our class discussion.
