Lesson Topic
The Great Gatsby
Lesson Outline
Today we focused on Fitzgerald's portrayal of the rich as a careless corrupt social class by examining Gatsby's lavish party scene. We noted the continued use of color imagery, "gold and harlequin" , to describe the rich as both pretentious and ridiculous. Nina discussed Nick's moral contempt for the partygoers ,and we then studied the foreshadowing and symbolism in references to driving cars as Jordan Baker informs Nick that she can be as careless as she pleases when she drives as long as others remain careful. Likewise ,the car accident scene as drunken revelers depart the party reinforces the image of the rich as careless and callous - inflicting damage and accepting no responsibility for their actions. And ,of course, as Nina knows from the movie, at the end of the novel it is Daisy's careless driving that kills the lower class character, Myrtle Wilson. Nina further analyzed chinks in Gatsby's adopted persona as a wealthy old moneyed member of the elite society of Tom and Daisy.
