The D-Day Invasion: The Beginning of the End of Nazi Germany
Lesson Outline
The "D" in D-Day refers to the "Day of Days." And indeed it was as it signified a joint, Allied invasion of Nazi occupied Europe. On June 6, 1944 the largest amphibious (by water) and air invasion in history crossed the English Channel to Normandy, France. Under the planning and leadership of U.S. General/Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied Western Europe put 1000's of soldiers who landed by water and air in unimaginable peril. The code name for this operation was "Operation Overlord." This historic invasion liberated Nazi occupied France and Allied forces continued to move east to defeat Germany. Finally, celebrations occurred around the world on May 8, 1945. This day is known as V-E (Victory in Europe Day). And this didn't end WWII as the war against Japan continued to rage in the Pacific. The cost of Allied lives to free the world of tyranny was tremendous. It's one of the many reasons historians refer to people who fought against dictators, contributed to the war effort or survived a variety of terrors as our world's "greatest generation." We will continue to focus on "D-Day" tomorrow.
