Boy in the Striped Pajamas
Lesson Outline
During the first segment of the session, Atticus completed his essay by writing a conclusion. We discussed how to use the thesis to formulate a final paragraph . We then began our study of our next book,"The Boy in the Striped Pajamas." I had previously distributed background material on the rise of Hitler and anti -semitism in Germany during this time period. Atticus raised many questions about the root of anti-semitism and the rise of Hitler. I then discussed point of view and the fable genre as the novel is subtitled "a fable." We looked at the opening pages and noted how the point of view is third person limited i.e. we see the story through the eyes of nine year old Bruno who is oblivious to his father's role as the Commandant of Auschwitz. We further discussed examples of fables which typically feature animal characters.
