The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
Lesson Outline
As point of view plays a critical role In the novel, we first reviewed that the novel is narrated from the third person limited point of view of a nine year old,Bruno. As such, I noted that the narration is from the point of view of a boy who does not understand anything about the Nazi party or appreciate that Auschwitz is a death camp. In fact, Bruno refers to the camp as "out-with" just as he refers to Hitler as the "Fury". Given the limited knowledge of the narrator, we then worked on drawing inferences about how Bruno's mother and maid feel about moving to Poland 's famous death camp where Bruno's father has been appointed Commander. Atticus is very interested in this aspect of history and raised many interesting historical and moral comments and questions about Nazi Germany and those who participated in the genocide.
