Lesson Outline
In honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday and Read Across America Day, our session integrated various Dr. Seuss themed activities. Math: Today we reviewed concepts of her recent lessons. Sadee then completed Written Assessment 18 which covered subtraction word problems (-10), drawing pictures in a pictograph, using comparison symbols with equations, counting money (dimes, nickels, and pennies), drawing pictures to represent numbers and then writing in expanded form, and solving addition equations. She did a terrific job with only one minor calculation error yielding a score of 95%. After reading, “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” by Dr. Seuss we completed a fun activity of graphing colored Goldfish crackers. Sadee tallied and drew a pictograph to reflect how many. She then responded to comparison questions. Bible: Sadee practiced her memory verse by writing and saying her verse (Isiah 55:6). She later scored a 100% on the recitation of this verse. ELA: We began with writing today to complete Sadee’s flag project paper. She copied her three sentences from her “sloppy copy” beautifully onto her final page. Next, we completed some make-up work from her absence this week. Sadee wrote her spelling words two times in her notebook as well as two dictation sentences, completed a phonics activity, and put her spelling words in alphabetical order. We moved on to our Dr. Seuss activities by starting with a handwriting paper in which Sadee copied sentences (as written by her teacher) about Dr. Seuss. She worked very hard to write neatly! We learned about making text connections with text-to-self, text-to-world, and text-to-text with our reading of “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish”. We enjoyed a reading of “The Cat in the Hat” and “The Cat in the Hat Comes Back”. We completed a comprehension and recall activity after the first story. Then, after hearing both stories, we completed a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the main events, characters, and setting of both stories. Sadee also identified nouns, verbs, and adjectives related to the stories.
