Lesson Outline
Throughout our session, we continued to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday (which was yesterday). Math: Sadee was assessed on completing one hundred subtraction problems in 10 minutes. She scored 100% in 8 minutes. ELA: We began with Sadee’s spelling and dictation. She scored a 100% on her assessment. She also completed her journal assignment, “I live in America!”. She met her rubric requirements and wrote about the president, Liberty Bell, and Statue of Liberty.
We began our literature studies with Dr. Seuss’, “Green Eggs and Ham”. After reading, Sadee answered follow up comprehension questions and identified rhyming words related to some of our stories. Christmas in March?! To continue our fun with Dr. Seuss, Sadee and I conjured up our Christmas spirit for a reading of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. We laughed that if Dr. Seuss could write “Wacky Wednesday”, we could celebrate a “Freaky Friday”! We wore Christmas accessories and enjoyed hot cocoa and Christmas cookies with our story! As we read, we discussed the feelings of the characters through their actions and expressions in illustrations for deeper understanding. We reminded ourselves that we don’t need our Christmas accessories, cocoa, and cookies to keep the love of Christmas, as it just takes heart. Sadee then completed several follow up activities related to the book including a crossword puzzle (which was actually the first one she’s ever done), generating adjectives to describe the Grinch at the beginning and the end of the book, put words from the book in alphabetical order, and played a fun comprehension and recall board game. Finally, we enjoyed “There’s a Wocket in my Pocket”. Sadee then completed a fun craft by drawing her own “wocket” type character. She called it a Zocket named Bocket and put in a large pocket!
