A Long Walk to Water
Lesson Outline
Our next novel, " Long Walk to water" is based on a true story about Salva S. who was able to emigrate from Sudan after years of deprivation and hardship in various refugee camps. We opened our inquiry by imagining a life in a desert town with no running water, no roads, no grocery stores.I had Atticus relate how many times this morning he had already used water, to wash ,to cook ,etc. From here I explained how water, which we take for granted , is a critical resource that provides the foundation for modernity. We then discussed the first chapters of the novel wherein Salva is separated from his family in 1985 during the Sudan civil war and Nya, in the parallel story, twenty years later, spends her entire day carrying water from a distant water source to her home. As Atticus encountered some difficulty with the study guide questions, we then studied the text after which Atticus completed the study guide homework.
