A long Walk to water
Lesson Outline
As Atticus continues to have some difficulty addressing the study guide questions, I again directed his attention to specific pages in the text to enable him to complete the homework. We then discussed how a critical event in the plot , the murder of Salva's uncle by the North Sudanese army, impacted Salva and the way he is thereafter treated by the group traveling to an Ethiopian refugee camp. In order to highlight the main character's plight , we then looked at photographs of Ethiopian refugee camps and noted the similarities between the photos and the novel's setting. Last, Atticus rewrote some of the plot events from last night's reading into a first person point of view of Salva. We discussed the benefits and limitations of a first person point of view as compared a third person point of view and concluded the first person point of view has greater emotional impact on the reader because the reader feels closer to the narrator.
