Ben Hogan
Lesson Outline
Cameron's passion for golf has truly enhanced our study of history. And when it comes to knowing dates, just ask Cameron about notable events and golfers and his memory is truly impressive. Today Cameron shared that perhaps no golfer better understood the game than Ben Hogan (1912 – 1997). He was an American professional golfer who is considered to be one of the greatest players in the history of the game. He is remembered for his profound influence on golf swing theory and his ball-striking ability. 1953 was Hogan's watershed season, a year in which he won 5 of the 6 tournaments he entered, including 3 major championships (a feat known as the Triple Crown of Golf). What we have noted about golfers in the early 20th century is that they used to play in a dress shirt and tie. And many of these amazing athletes not only smoked at events, they smoked while they were competing! Thank goodness that habit stopped! Hogan's 1953 was the first time a golfer won 3 major professional championships - until Tiger Woods in 2000.

Lesson Comments
Remote lesson today. Cameron has a tournament this weekend in Wellington. It's been great to discover that incorporating golf into history enhances Cameron's attention and understanding of historical times/events that have coincided with important people and tournaments in golf since the late 19th century.
