Lesson Topic
The emergence of an American Identity
Lesson Outline
We examined a map identifying the Northern, Middle, Southern, and Backcountry identities, which we found helpful as a review. Major facts about the new and unique American identity included: a common history, from a shared English background; a disregard of indigenous rights, which led to the belief that land was cheap and available; an emerging middle class; power for landowners; increased tolerance for religious differences (because of religious diversity; and shared enemies - from wars with indigenous peoples.
