Today Aiden and I worked at the white board together to discuss the WHYS of Integer Multiplication and Division. I first wrote the rules: same sign - positive, different signs - negative. We first answered the questions by applying the rules, then we broke down why it worked. We started with 3(-2). We expanded it so that it really means (-2) three times to have (-2)+(-2)+(-2) to get -6. We did another example with dividing -10/2. We drew a box with 10 slices and then divided them into 2. We could see that each had 5 slices in them but each of them would be (-1)+(-1)+(-1)+(-1)+(-1). We discussed concepts like 10/-2. How it's difficult to think about dividing a number a negative time. So we used the commutative property to think about 10/-2 as -1(10/2), then the order of operations from there. I think this helped to clarify the rules for Aiden.
