Lesson Topic
5.3 Distributive Property in Equations
Lesson Outline
Today Aiden and I completed our review of old material. We just went through and organized his notes, he made sure everything was in order, and he felt ready to continue moving on. We will now just focus on the new material. I will give Aiden warm ups of old material from time to time, so he can have confidence in that he has understood and retained the material he has previously learned.
Today we worked on word problems with distributive property. Aiden read the word problems and then practiced setting up the equations to model the scenario. We recalled how to use the distributive property to solve. Aiden worked on a problem like 10(x+3.5)=75. He practiced solving it two ways. His first approach started by dividing both sides by 10. His second approach distributed the 10 first. After completing both approaches, Aiden decided that he liked to divide by 10 on both sides first because it was one less step. I agreed. Aiden is getting better at correcting his notations. He used to write "x3" for three times x and now he is catching himself and writing 3x. Also, instead of using the "old" division sign, he is remembering to divide by writing it as a fraction.
