Lesson Outline
I evaluated Cade's phonological awareness (the ability to hear and manipulate sounds within words) using the PAST assessment. Phonological awareness is highly predictive of reading success. Cade confidently separated compound words but struggled to separate words into syllables. We will begin remediation at that level with a one-minute exercise at the beginning of each session. I administered a visual, auditory, and blending drill to strengthen reading and writing at the phonetic level. We played a game of Phonics Dice with CVC words to reinforce quick and accurate blending. I taught Cade the concept of silent-E (which his school calls "magic e"). He then read words and sentences with silent-E . I dictated words and sentences with silent-e for Cade to write and edit (Recipe for Reading, p. 102) We reviewed the UFLI irregular words list; by the end of session Cade confidently spelled his, you, and said.
