Lesson Outline
PJ and I had two sessions today. In the first session, PJ and I started a new chapter on the Introduction to Solving Equations. We worked in our online Savvas acount. We discussed what it means for an expression to be an equation and what it means for two sides to be equivalent. We considered a scale with 3 blocks on one side and 9 blocks on the other. I asked PJ what we could do to make the scale balanced. He said add 6 blocks to the left side. I agreed and then showed him how an equation could be used to represent this situation: 3+x=9. In our 2nd session we got more practice solving these problem types. PJ did a great job recalling how what you do to one side of the equation you do to the other to keep it equivalent. Then we read some word problems that required PJ to set up and then solve. I was impressed with PJs ability to read through the word problem and properly set up the equations. Today we worked with addition and subtraction. Tomorrow we will work on multiplication and division.
