5.4 Inequalities
Lesson Outline
Today Aiden and I moved onto 5.4 Solving Inequalities. He asked if we could work out of the textbook instead of the online Savvas account. It covers the same content so I was ok with that. We worked with problems like "If you're traveling on a plane and the total bag weight must not exceed 50 pounds, then how much can your 2nd bag weigh if your first bag weighs 38 pounds?" Aiden had to write the equations 38+p<=50 (that is less than or equal to). Then he had to solve the equation and interpret it in the context of the problem. He determined that the 2nd bag must weigh 12 pounds or less. Then Aiden had to graph the solution on a number line. Aiden recalled using an open circle and closed circle from 6th grade, but he was bummed because he couldn't remember which is which. He brought up that he doesn't remember everything he learned and how it's bothersome to him. I told him that is why all of the content in math classes repeat, 6th-8th Math is all repetitive for that reason. I told him it's ok he doesn't remember the specifics, but now with a reminder he does. And the more he's exposed to it, the more likely it'll stick. I encouraged him that we will see this content again. He did a great job conceptualizing. We covered problems with negative numbers that made the setups tricky, but Aiden was able to set up the inequalities easily.
