Lesson Outline
Today Aiden and I worked with a ruler and protractor on how to construct scale models. The first problem we discussed was a model drawing of a patio. Aiden used the scale factor 1cm=1yd and drew a trapezoidal figure. He used the ruler to measure two perpendicular lines at 4 cm each. Then he used the protractor to measure a 135 degree angle to connect the sides. We discussed how this model would be used to measure the actual size of a new build patio. The next problem we discussed equilateral triangles. Aiden recalled they were triangles with equal side measures and equal angle measures. We connected them to make a tessellation. I showed Aiden photos of other tessellations so he could see how pretty they can be. Aiden did a great job using the protractor to measure 60 degree angles. He measured each side at a 1/2 in and combined the triangles together. The goal was to create a table that 10 people could sit at. We noticed there were multiple solutions, but some would make an odd way to set up a dinner party. This was the first time Aiden worked with a protractor to measure angles. He did a great job!
